About Family Luach
What Family Luach is
Family Luach makes personalized Hebrew and English wall calendars for families. It started as a calendar made for one family, with everyone's Hebrew birthdays, anniversaries and yahrzeits on it, and grew into a tool any family can use. It is made by Ben, in the Atlanta area.
Where the dates and times come from
- Hebrew dates, holidays, Torah portions, candle lighting and havdalah: Hebcal (the @hebcal/core library, open source under GPL; Hebcal data licensed CC BY 4.0).
- Birthday and yahrzeit rules: Hebcal's documented yahrzeit and birthday rules. For dates from Adar of a regular year in a leap year, yahrzeits go in Adar I (Ashkenazic custom, Rema 568:7) and birthdays and anniversaries in Adar II (standard practice); you can change either.
- Locations: US ZIP code centers and city coordinates from public datasets, with the local time zone for each place.
How we check accuracy
Every release is tested with an automated suite of several hundred scenarios and over half a million individual comparisons. Hebrew dates and weekly portions are compared with a second, independent Hebrew calendar library (pyluach). Sunset and nightfall are compared with an independent astronomy library (astral) for cities across every US time zone, including places like El Paso and Pensacola that sit in a different time zone from most of their state. Family dates are tested on edge cases such as Adar in leap years, the 30th of Cheshvan and Kislev, and dates after sunset.
The calendar has not been reviewed by a rabbi. Times are for planning. Check with your rabbi.
